Motivation is such a finicky thing.
It comes from deep within and it is so different for each person and it can be different for the same person on different days! That’s why it is so important to surround yourself with people and things that motivate you for those days when you just aren’t feeling it. When you don’t feel like giving it your all and instead you feel like being a lazy slug.. your community can be your motivation. That’s one of my favorite parts about Crossfit. There are days I go to the gym just because I want to see my friends smiling faces that morning! Whatever it is to get you out of bed.
That being said, I am also a huge advocate for building healthy habits so you don’t have to rely on motivation ALL.THE.TIME. Most days, for me to get my butt to the gym and to work, I don’t need motivation. I just do it because it’s habit at this point. I am used to my alarm going off at 5:00am and whether or not I’m going to the gym isn’t even a question! I just DO.
However, there are definitely those days where you need a little extra motivation and I have several go-to phrases or things that have helped me in the past.
One phrase I tell myself when I need that extra boost is “The time will pass anyways”.
Really pause and let that sink in. Think about the fleeting nature of time. Remember all of the times that you’ve been genuinely surprised that time continued on.
- The seasons that continue to fly by faster than you’re ready
- The life events maybe going on that make you feel like the world has stopped for you but it continues to move on for everyone else
- The hour long (fill in the blank with something you don’t love.. yoga practice.. seminar at school.. etc.) that seems to truly last a lifetime
When I truly recognize that the time is going to pass regardless of what I choose to do with it.. it tends to drive me to make smarter decisions with how to use my time.
I remember when I started my 3 month macro program back in the Springtime and I thought to myself.. 3 months is going to take forever. How am I going to stick to this program for three whole months? Sure enough, 3 months flew by and when I checked out my before/after pictures at the end of the program, the difference was amazing and made me so proud.
Don’t continue to set false dates in the future for when you want to make your dreams happen. That kind of thinking is so unhealthy because it’s you choosing to put things that are important to you on the back burner. Choose to bring your priorities into your life.. TODAY. No matter what they might be and no matter how limited the time you have to fit it in is. I do 5 minutes of meditation each morning because that’s all I can muster for now. And I am DAMN PROUD of those 5 minutes!
Time is going to continue to fly by and there is NOTHING you can do about it. Recognize that it makes your minutes, hours, and days so incredibly valuable. Use that time wisely. Don’t be a slug. Don’t do things that waste the precious time that you have.
